“Zorbas” at the Cultural Center: The Sofia Opera Ballet Presents the Legendary Work of Mikis Theodorakis

To mark the centenary of the birth of the renowned Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (1925–2021), the Ballet of the Sofia Opera will present his world-famous musical masterpiece, “Zorbas,” on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1, at 21:00, in the “Andreas and Maria Kalokerinou” Hall.

This ballet is based on Theodorakis’ acclaimed score for the film “Alexis Zorbas,” directed by Michael Cacoyannis. The composer himself re-orchestrated the music for his collaboration with choreographer Lorca Massine, leading to the ballet’s world premiere in 1988 at the Arena di Verona. The production was met with resounding acclaim for both its music and choreography.

The literary characters created by Nikos Kazantzakis come alive on stage through the dancers’ performances, offering audiences a landmark work of modern Greek culture.
