Organized by the Erasmus Student Network Greece (ESN) and supported by the Region of Crete, this year’s trip officially kicked off on Thursday in the heart of Heraklion, in Daskalogiannis Square. There, the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, welcomed nearly 800 students from 50 countries, as they paraded their national flags through the city’s main streets—an annual tradition that marks the start of the Cretan Cultural Festival.
“It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to Crete,” said Mr. Arnaoutakis in his address to the students.
“You are the driving force of a continent that is evolving. In your faces shines the light of creativity. In your voices, we hear the hope, strength, and pride of the next generation.”
In reference to the challenging international climate, he added:
“What matters most—what gives us strength—is the new generation of every society and nation. You are our source of inspiration. From you, we hope for everything.”
Concluding his speech, the Governor emphasized:
“For us in the Region of Crete, at the southernmost tip of the European Union, young people represent a renewed Europe. You are rebuilding its foundations—far from nationalism and narrow-minded thinking. Your path is a testament to how creativity can guide us forward. By coming to Crete, you make us proud. You are leaving your mark on the present—the signature of a generation that honors the past while building the future.”
A Platform for Global Outreach
As in previous years, “The Crete Trip 2025” offers a powerful opportunity for global exposure and cultural outreachfor the island.
Accompanied by volunteers from ESN Greece, the students will travel across Crete, immersing themselves in its rich culture, music, cuisine, and history.
The official welcome event was also attended by Deputy Governors Georgia Milaki and Nikos Syrigonakis, as well as Theodora Koutentaki, Special Advisor for Youth and Entrepreneurship.
Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, Antonis Kontokrithakis thanked the Governor and the Region of Crete for their ongoing support:
“For the 13th year in a row, the Region of Crete exemplifies the spirit of hospitality shown to the Erasmus+ generation. Over 800 students from 50 countries are here to explore the unique beauty of Crete for four days. We are grateful to everyone who supports us.”
