Heraklion: Call for Water Conservation

fter severe disruptions over the weekend caused by Saharan dust—combined with a temporary interruption in water supply from the Aposelemis Dam—the Heraklion Municipal Water and Sewerage Company (DEYAH) is urging residents to use water sparingly.

On Sunday morning (May 25), a new malfunction in the ozonation system halted its operation, resulting in a daily shortfall of 15,000 cubic meters of water for Heraklion. The situation has become critical: with dust and mud blanketing the city, many residents have taken to hosing down their yards and cars.

DEYAH is advising citizens to sweep outdoor spaces rather than use hoses, which can lead to significant water waste. According to the utility, these water-saving measures are necessary to avoid further supply issues, as Heraklion is already receiving a greatly reduced amount of water from the reservoir.
